For years, college leaders have talked about becoming more diverse and inclusive, although they did not always commit to those goals. But the national conversation changed dramatically after George Floyd died in police custody in May of 2020. The protests that followed, fueled by growing racial tensions and shifting national demographics, have stopped many colleges in their tracks and made them reconsider diversity more seriously than ever.

At the same time, the coronavirus pandemic, which has disproportionately claimed Black lives, upended colleges’ plans for the fall, hurting minority and low-income students’ chances of completing a college degree.

This collection includes many of The Chronicle’s must-read articles on how colleges have responded to the crisis, and what steps they should take to make diversity and equity a priority. It includes interviews with students, advice from experts, and pointed opinion essays from academics. We hope it will help readers continue a difficult but important conversation on their own campuses.
