Focus Collection: How to Be an Interim President

When a chief executive departs suddenly, an interim president must take charge just as a college is wobbling and set it on a steady course again. Whether the previous top leader left because of a new job, a health emergency, a conflict with the Board of Trustees, mismanagement of funds, or a scandal, the interim chief must project a sense of calmness and exude confidence that the institution will  emerge stronger than ever. At the same time, the temporary leader might hesitate to take major steps that the next president might not buy into.
