Chairs play a pivotal role in building a productive and supportive culture within their departments. As the link between administration and the faculty, and with responsibility for the development and support for faculty, staff, and students, the chair must balance a variety of competing needs and different perspectives – a challenge made more difficult in the current political climate.
In this 60-minute session, experts explored best culture-building practices that apply to the full range of a chair’s stakeholders: faculty, students, and staff. How can a chair create meaningful change that’s also sustainable? How can a chair create positive relationships with and among colleagues?
Panelist:
- Brian Gittens, Vice Chancellor for Academic Pathways and Workforce Partnerships, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)
Moderator:
- Martin Kurzweil, Vice President, Educational Transformation, Ithaka S+R
