The Almanac of Higher Education, 2025

The Almanac is always evolving in response to the world around us. Our aim each year is to create a portrait of American higher education at this moment. Once again, we find that the past year — particularly the past several months — has been a turbulent time for everyone, colleges and universities included. 

As you read the 52 tables included in this year’s Almanac, you will notice that the majority of our data come from the U.S. Department of Education, specifically the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) managed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The future of this data, on which The Chronicle depends for its reporting, has been uncertain due to changes in federal priorities and the disruption of the Department of Education. 

This year, we streamlined the sections to center on the three major facets of higher education that the Almanac captures: students, the work force, and institutions. We also condensed our Data Points section to provide a broader visual overview of the biggest data stories The Chronicle covered over the last year.
