The Almanac of Higher Education, 2026

Each year's Almanac is a conversation between the Almanacs of the past and the state of higher education in the current moment. Sometimes, however, these tables have outlived their usefulness or need a reorganization or re-examination. In other cases, outside forces initiate change. This year, the Carnegie classifications for 2025 were integrated into the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), forcing us to realign our groupings of institutions.

Much of our data comes from the U.S. Department of Education, specifically the IPEDS
data managed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Where we can, we provide both aggregated values — by sector or by Carnegie classification — alongside individual campuses. We want to provide value for every reader, regardless of their institution or interest, but are limited by the available data and, in print, by space. So we make adjustments; we tinker, but when we can, we aim to keep the core the same so readers can cross-reference prior Almanacs.
